We recently broke ground at Ferndale on Republic, the landmark redevelopment of Brightwaters Commons in Republic Road, with an official sod turning event. This ceremony was hosted by the co-owners in this redevelopment, the Moolman Group – also the lead developers, the PHG Group and Braam van Huyssteen.

Guests were welcomed by Pieter Lombaard, CEO for the Moolman Group with Braam van Huysteen re-confirming the significance of Ferndale on Republic as a community shopping centre: “Republic Road and the area surrounding it is so busy, and this is a huge opportunity to offer something truly valuable to the local community.”

This view is also shared by some of the local ward councillors, who attended the event. Councillor Mike Wood shared how important the centre is for the local economy: “I think this is an exciting initiative. Simply seeing the latest unemployment figures that have recently come out, lets you know that any initiative to Randburg, in particular, to boost the economy and generate more jobs has to be welcomed.” Councillor David Potter added to this: “I feel that this is the ultimate change the centre needs… we have finally arrived at a vision for a deserved upmarket shopping centre that can serve thousands of people in the surrounding area.”

Guests to the ceremony were welcomed to a tour of the new 12,000m² Urban Brew Studios, the local leading television production company that has been in business since 1995.  In keeping with the theme of adding value to the community, UnlockD a youth talent-development business who prepare young job seekers to kick-start their careers, has taken up 1 000m² of office space in the centre, to ‘unlock’ local talent and potential. Adding some flair to the event were the finalists in the 2018 ‘Apprentesses’ competition, a platform empowering young women to reach their dreams and make a difference in the South African entertainment industry.

Once complete in September 2019, Ferndale on Republic will feature several impressive national brands and stores to serve the densely populated community of 36 000 households in the surrounding area. This massive mixed-use redevelopment is approximately 53 000m² in size, of which half will be dedicated to the shopping centre housing existing tenants like Pick n Pay and Clicks, alongside newcomers such as Food Lovers Market and ABSA bank. Pick n Pay will be relocating to a bigger, improved location in the next few months, and will trade from their new site in April 2019. In the interim, please note that the main entrance to Pick n Pay is closed due to construction and shoppers should make use of a temporary entrance located in the new parking area.

And remember - you don’t have to wait until 2019 then to visit us - these stores are currently trading!
